In Short

Google Maps promotion consists of 3 jobs: a complete, verified business profile with an accurate category, a steady flow of fresh, honest reviews with replies, and identical business data on the website and in directories. Google ranks by relevance, distance, and prominence. ChatGPT and Gemini additionally look at reviews and mentions outside maps.

Below: how Google chooses whom to show, the order for setting up a profile, review rules, the link between maps and AI assistants, prices, and questions for an agency.

How Does Google Decide Whom to Show at the Top of Maps?

Google combines 3 signals: relevance, distance, and prominence. This is how the Google Business Profile Help describes the logic. It also states that you cannot pay for a better organic ranking.

SignalWhat It MeansWhat You Can Do
RelevanceHow well the profile matches the queryAn accurate primary category, services, description
DistanceHow far the business is from the person or from the place in the queryYou cannot change it; just enter the correct address
ProminenceHow well known the business is online and offlineReviews and ratings, mentions on other websites, the website’s positions in search

According to the Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors study, the strongest single factor in local results is the profile’s primary category. Review signals make up about 20% of the weight there.

How Do You Set Up a Business Profile So It Ranks?

Start with verifying the profile and an accurate category, then fill in everything Google allows. The order of work:

  1. Verify the profile. With a verified profile you control it yourself: hours, photos, replies to reviews.
  2. Choose the primary category by your main service. “Dental clinic” is more accurate than “Medical center,” and “Pizzeria” is more accurate than “Restaurant.” Add secondary categories for other services.
  3. Enter the name, address, and phone number exactly as on the website. Repeat the same data in directories and in Bing Places.
  4. Fill in business hours, services, and prices. Update hours for holidays.
  5. Add photos of the interior, team, facade, and entrance. A person should recognize the place from the street.
  6. Add LocalBusiness markup to the website. The Google Search Central documentation describes how to pass the address, hours, phone number, and coordinates of each branch.
  7. Add a UTM tag to the website link in the profile. This way, visits from maps appear in analytics separately from the rest of search.

For a clinic, this order together with the website and reviews is covered in the article on dental marketing.

How Do You Collect Reviews Without Breaking Google’s Rules?

Ask every customer for a review after a visit and reply to every review, including negative ones. Google’s policy on Maps content prohibits:

  • paying for reviews or giving discounts and gifts for them;
  • asking for reviews selectively, only from satisfied customers;
  • writing reviews on behalf of the owner, employees, or about competitors;
  • inflating engagement with fake accounts.

The number of reviews directly affects what people choose. According to the BrightLocal 2025 survey, 47% of consumers do not contact a business with fewer than 20 reviews, and 31% choose only companies rated 4.5 or higher. A good rule: get new reviews every month and reply to each within a few days.

Does a Top Google Maps Position Lead to Recommendations in ChatGPT and Gemini?

Partly: Gemini relies on Google data, while ChatGPT searches through other sources. According to the SOCi Local Visibility Index 2026 report, brands appear in the Google Local 3-Pack in 35.9% of queries, in Gemini in 11%, in Perplexity in 7.4%, and in ChatGPT in 1.2%. Fewer than half of map leaders appear in AI recommendations. Location data accuracy in Gemini is close to 100%, and in ChatGPT and Perplexity it is 68%.

For local queries, ChatGPT uses web search and the user’s location, as described in the OpenAI Help Center. That is why data on third-party sites matters for it. According to an AirOps study, about 85% of brand visibility in AI answers is formed outside the brand’s own website. The article on brand mentions for AI visibility shows where to look for such mentions by business type, and the piece on how ChatGPT chooses sources explains how it picks them.

Darren Shaw, founder of Whitespark, writes in the Local Search Ranking Factors report:

“Research and discovery of local businesses is still predominantly done through Google’s local results because it’s a much better experience for local intent queries than LLM responses.”

The takeaway for a business: first the profile and reviews in Google, then the same data and mentions in the places AI assistants take information from.

What Matters for a Clinic, Restaurant, and Auto Shop?

In every niche, people search for a specific service, so the category and the list of services matter most.

NichePrimary CategoryWhat to Fill In on the ProfileWhere the Same Data Is Needed Elsewhere
ClinicBy main specializationServices, doctors in photos, hours of each branchMedical directories, a website with prices
RestaurantBy cuisine or formatMenu, price level, photos of dishes and the dining roomDelivery services, food guides
Auto repair shopBy type of workList of works, car brands, hours, entranceAuto directories, owner forums

How Much Does Google Maps Promotion Cost?

Prices as of November 2026.

WorkPrice at MOVE
Verifying and completing a Google Business Profile$120 one-time (strategy and audit)
Google review moderation$50 per month (strategy and audit)
Google Ads advertising, including on mapssetup from $330, management from $440 per month (Google Ads)
AI visibility auditfrom $1,500 (AI visibility)
GEO managementfrom $1,500 per month (AI visibility)

Work out the payback yourself: (the contractor’s monthly fee) ÷ (calls and route requests from the profile per month). You can find these numbers in the profile statistics. If you have 1 location, few competitors nearby, and time to reply to reviews every week, you can verify the profile yourself, without an agency.

What to Ask the Agency Before Signing?

Choose by experience in your niche and by the report you will receive. 7 questions:

  1. What experience do you have in my niche? Ask for case studies with client figures on calls or bookings.
  2. Who owns the profile? The profile must belong to you, and the agency gets manager access.
  3. How do you collect reviews? Any scheme that pays for reviews or gives discounts for them violates Google’s rules.
  4. What is included in the monthly price? Photos, posts, replies to reviews, directories, the website.
  5. Which KPIs are in the report? Calls, routes, visits to the website, positions for queries in the district.
  6. What do you do for ChatGPT and Gemini? Data in directories, mentions, checking AI answers. Read about the metrics in the article on AI visibility KPIs.
  7. Do you guarantee the top 3? A guaranteed position is a warning sign: an agency cannot change the distance to the customer.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to the top of Google Maps?
Google ranks business profiles by 3 signals: relevance to the query, distance from the person, and the prominence of the business. To move up, verify your profile, choose an accurate primary category, fill in the address, hours, services, and photos, get new reviews regularly, and reply to them. Distance cannot be changed.
Can you pay Google for a higher position on maps?
You cannot pay for an organic position: the Google Business Profile Help says directly that a better local ranking cannot be bought. You can pay to appear in ad placements on maps through Google Ads. Such ads are labeled as ads.
How much does Google Maps promotion cost?
At MOVE, verifying and completing a Google Business Profile costs $120 one-time, and review moderation costs $50 per month. An AI visibility audit starts at $1,500, and GEO management at $1,500 per month.
Can I ask customers to leave a Google review?
You can and should, if you ask all customers equally. Google's rules prohibit paying for reviews, giving discounts or gifts for them, asking for reviews only from satisfied customers, and writing reviews on behalf of the owner or employees.
If I am at the top of Google Maps, will ChatGPT recommend me?
Not necessarily. According to the SOCi Local Visibility Index 2026 report, fewer than half of Google Maps leaders match AI recommendations. Gemini takes data from the Google profile almost without errors, while ChatGPT searches through other sources, so it needs accurate data on third-party sites, reviews, and mentions.
